Adult Swim's Premier Fresh Series of This Year Earns a Substantial Renewal for an Additional Two Seasons.
Last October, Adult Swim saw the return of its offbeat hit, Smiling Friends. However, later that same month, the channel launched a fresh animated series with a distinctly unique tone. Haha, You Clowns proved to be heartwarming and calm, reminiscent of a animated take of a serene talk show. During a period often defined by bleakness, this show's earnestness resonated deeply and propelled it a surprise hit.
A Significant Investment
In mid-December, the network made a major announcement: Haha, You Clowns has been renewed for a further two seasons. This gives showrunner Joe Cappa a massive runway to further explore the story of the Campbell family. The series follows three respectful teenage brothers whose primary trait is their strong bond for their widowed father, with Cappa voicing for all four central characters.
"My deepest thanks go to the viewers of the show who welcomed the series and helped it grow," said Cappa. "I am overjoyed that I get to spend more time in the Campbell household for the foreseeable future."
A President's Endorsement
In the same announcement commendation from Adult Swim president Michael Ouweleen, who called the series as "radically heartfelt and strangely uncanny." He shouted out the fans who found the show and supported its distinctly quirky style.
"All of you showed up for this new show, rooted for it on social media, and expanded its audience week over week so we could greenlight not one, but two more seasons," commented Ouweleen. "In the words: 'You are strong! You are loved!'"
A Different Kind of Comedy
Earlier this fall, Haha, You Clowns was hailed as "a gentle counterpart" to more cynical adult animated fare. Viewers found something deeply soothing about following this lovable family go about their daily lives.
In earlier interviews, creator Joe Cappa stated his goal to move the comedy genre beyond its long-running cynical streak. He attributed this trend to the rise of certain blockbuster franchises.
“We're stuck in a cycle of irony that we are trapped in,” noted Cappa. “It's like we have to know we’re the smartest person in the room when we're watching stuff. I feel like we've been doing this for a decade, and we need to laugh at something different now. Comedy has to evolve.”
The Path Forward
With this renewal, with Haha, You Clowns set to continue, Cappa may well catalyze that very evolution. If nothing else, the renewal ensures audiences a little more time to bask in the warm glow of the unique Campbell clan.
The first season's conclusion of Haha, You Clowns will premiere on December 21st. The entire series is ready to watch on HBO Max.
