California is Entirely Drought-Free for the First Instance in a Quarter Century.
For the first time in 25 years, no portion of California is facing water scarcity. This milestone follows grueling years marked by below-average rain that intensified wildfire risks and pressured its huge agribusiness.
A Chart Indicates Zero Abnormally Dry Areas
Thursday's report from the U.S. Drought Monitor showed that the entire state is without any level of drought. This shift was driven by multiple above-normal rainfall that replenished water storage sites like Oroville and Shasta well above their long-term norms.
“To those aged 25 and below you’ve spent your life in a world where California has been entering or recovering from drought,” remarked a weather expert.
Following Powerful Weather to Soggy Celebrations
The path to this point featured intense and deadly winter storms that struck the state in 2023, causing extensive inundation, blackouts, and tragic losses. Even though those events started to mitigate the drought, they did not eliminate it.
Even into late December, pockets like northeastern California were still classified as unusually parched. Substantial precipitation at the onset of 2026 eliminated those final dry conditions.
The Vital Sierra Snow Presents a Challenge
Yet, hydrologists note that being out of drought should not be confused with having no water worries. Recent measurements of the high-elevation snow show it at only about 70% of the typical level.
This mountain snow, which accounts for approximately 30% of the state's usable water as it thaws later in the year, is a key piece for future water availability. Water officials stress that it is not yet time to make predictions for the annual water supply.
“What we are observing right now is a higher ratio of rain to snow,” explained a hydrology section chief. “The goal is the snow accumulation to pick up by April 1st so that we’re nearer to normal.”
While the drought map is entirely green, the next challenge is to preserving this positive water situation for the months to come.
