American flight controllers are increasingly looking for additional employment and calling in sick, as they remain on duty without pay during the government shutdown, the transportation secretary has stated.

"The controllers are wearing thin," Sean Duffy told a news outlet on Sunday, as certain aircraft were grounded on the California shoreline due to staffing shortages.

Following the federal closure on October 1st, flight controllers, who are considered critical staff, were told to continue performing their duties without pay.

But some have been missing, leading airports to stop or slow their flight operations, which has exacerbated setbacks caused by weather and additional factors.

More than three thousand US flights were delayed on Sunday, and the secretary stated he anticipates the situation to deteriorate further.

"I am seeing the pressure," Duffy remarked in an interview on a weekend program, noting that he had spoken to multiple professionals to hear their concerns firsthand.

"They're taking second jobs, they're out there looking, 'Can I drive Uber, can I secure another source of income to cover expenses?'" he continued.

The secretary added that on Saturday twenty-two notifications at airports indicated flights would be held up due to a shortage of workers - one of the highest after the shutdown started.

The US government shutdown entered its twenty-sixth day on Sunday, rendering it the second most extended shutdown in the past.

He has repeatedly warned that aviation regulators would slow down the number of aircraft in the air if there is a shortage of safety personnel.

In his conversation, he declined to respond straightforwardly when questioned if it was safe to travel by air in the US, and instead issued a direct appeal to the professionals.

"I need my staff concentrating on the flight paths, not on the finances at home," Duffy said.

On Sunday, some planes were stopped at LAX due to employee deficits, causing disruption at the fifth most active terminal in the nation and among the most crowded in the globe, as well as other flights stretching upward to the city of Oakland.

The Federal Aviation Administration notice was issued at 08:45 local time on Sunday. Many flights were operating normally before noon.

Flights at Newark Airport, though, were postponed an average of 82 minutes due to personnel issues, and the FAA indicated DFW, the second most active airfield in the US, could encounter difficulties from reduced staff later in the day.

The agency advised travelers in the state to check with airlines about revised flight schedules.

The situation comes ahead of Game 3 of the World Series, which is scheduled in LA on Monday night, and about one month before the Thanksgiving break, among the peak periods to travel by air in the United States.

Pressure on US air travel contributed to ending a federal closure in 2019. Back then, the halt had entered its fifth week and disrupted flight services, including aviator instruction.

It prompted a number of air traffic controllers to remain absent on the identical date on 25 January 2019, briefly halting travel at New York's LaGuardia airport.

That same day, the former president, who at the time was in his first term as leader, agreed to sign a short-term spending bill, bringing an end to the government shutdown after thirty-five days.
