Instructor Fatally Shot and Two Dozen Pupils Seized in Firefight at Educational Institution in Nigeria
Armed assailants have fatally shot an educator and abducted at least 25 students in an assault against a girls' secondary school in Nigeria's northwestern region, police reports indicate.
The gang of attackers stormed the comprehensive secondary school for girls in the Maga locality within Kebbi State at approximately 04:00 local time on the start of the week, officials stated.
The attackers "confronted officers on duty in a firefight" before breaching the school's outer barrier and abducting the learners from their dormitory, according to a statement.
One member of staff was lost their life while safeguarding the students. Another staff member suffered bullet injuries and is now being treated medically.
Observers recounted a sizeable number of assailants, known locally as bandits, who arrived firing sporadically to generate terror.
Area inhabitants told reporters that the attackers afterwards forced a number of girls into adjacent wilderness.
The police said they had deployed "supplementary tactical squads, in coordination with armed forces and community security teams" to the area.
A coordinated search and rescue operation is presently taking place in adjacent wooded areas and believed flight corridors.
In the past few years, learning centers in northern Nigerian regions have become frequent targets for militant organizations, who often carry out abductions to demand financial compensation or secure advantages in discussions with officials.
