During an initial day in his new role, Zohran Mamdani committed to “transform” America's largest city, declaring “a different age” and an bold start to his tenure.

An Unprecedented Figure

The new figure, who just a year ago remained a virtually unknown state assemblyman, has become the city's first mayor born in Africa. He also made history by being the first to be take the oath of office using the Qur'an.

“A moment like this comes rarely and rarer still is it that the people themselves whose grasp the levers of change,” Mamdani added.

Rejecting advice to lower expectations, the mayor asserted: “I will do no such thing. The only expectation I seek to reset is that of modest goals. Beginning today we will lead expansively and audaciously.”

Steering by Democratic Socialist Principles

Mamdani openly embraced his socialist politics. “I was elected as a democratic socialist and I will govern as one. I will not abandon my ideals for concern of being called radical,” he said to an enthusiastic response.

The ceremony was a two-part event, starting with a midnight oath-taking in a former subway station. He was formally sworn in on the front steps of city hall by political ally Bernie Sanders, who praised Mamdani's election as a victory over powerful interests.

An Ambitious Blueprint

Mamdani now begins one of the most unrelenting jobs in American politics, with a agenda promising:

• A halt to rent increases for about 1 million households
• A pilot of city-run grocery stores

The estimated $10 billion expense of these programs may prove difficult to finance. Mamdani has vowed to tax more heavily the wealthiest New Yorkers and big business. However, as a municipality subject to the state government, he will require the backing of Governor Kathy Hochul.
